"Urology treatments for bladder, kidney and..."

About: Colchester General Hospital / Urology

Following an urgent referral from my GP for haematuria I was seen within a week and a plan of exhaustive and thorough testing was put in place. An early CT scan, rapidly followed by cystoscopy and MRI confirmed the presence of kidney stones but, of greater urgency, a bladder tumour and possible prostate cancer. The bladder tumour was excised within a fortnight and at the same time a template biopsy was taken, confirming the presence of an intermediate risk prostate cancer. In clinic I was presented with the fullest information and given time to consider alternatives, opting for hormone manipulation then radiotherapy, with regular monitoring cystoscopy for bladder tumour recurrence.

As my prostate was significantly enlarged I was listed for TURP prior to radiotherapy. On arrival at the Elective Care Centre I was told that TURP was not suitable and that HoLEP was preferable and the consultant amended his list to accommodate me that morning.

All went extremely well on both occasions. The care I experienced at all stages of the procedures so far undertaken has been exemplary and I can not speak highly enough of the staff on Mersea Ward, all consummate professionals who treated me so well.

My original CT scan has also been reviewed and I am listed for lithotripsy shortly, when I look forward to the same level of care and another successful outcome.

I will meet the oncologist again in June to plan the radiotherapy, then hopefully all should be well.

To sum up, all in all a very positive experience from start to now. It is a privilege to be treated at such a first rate hospital.
