What I liked
This is my second surgery at Kings- the first time being in 2007. In 2007 I was on the Matthew Whiting Ward and had an awful experience for various reaons including staff, the hygeine of the hospital and decisions around my care and absolutely no aftercare advice.
My experience this week was a complete turnaround! I was again on this ward and found the majority of nursing, pharmacy, Recovery Room and GP staff were kind, open, listened to me and tried hard to make my stay comfortable. It was much cleaner- looked much brighter- and the staff took time to just say 'hello' or call me 'sweetheart' ; little things that can mean a lot when you're in hospital, alone, scared and vulnerable. I really appreciated this and feel much happier and less anxious about when I attend for my third (and hopefully final) surgery in a few month time.
Special mention to one staff member- you're an angel! Thank you!
What could be improved
My electronic medication sheet was 'lost' meaning I was in pain for 4 hours waiting for the doctor on call to come and visit me- when he could have simply entered a painkiller on the electronic sheet.
I waited 10 hours for my operation and was told different things by different members of staff- this was frustrating but I understand how this can happen in such a large and busy hospital.
I was in recovery for 4 hours as there were no beds- it turns out a bed just needed to be moved from Matthew Whiting to another ward so I could go there- I wish this had been prioritised as recovery is not a nice place to stay for so long.
I asked to speak to my surgeon a number of times and did not have the chance to do so- I ended up handing him a letter in the theatre room- my questions still werent answered.
A nurse on Murray Faulkner Ward (I have her name but shallnt mention it here) was rude and discussed my personal medical history in the corridor and lift whilst her and the porter were wheeling me to surgery- I was very upset about this!
Despite my recommendations above Kings really has improved and the staff generally work hard to give the best care... The Healthcare Assistants need more recognition- they are angels!
