"Not open on Saturday morning."

About: Victoria Hospital W'borne

I fell over a wayward broom in the garden on Wednesday 7pm aiming to lock the back gate before the blizzard really hit. I used a torch etc, but still missed this! I didn't think that I had broken it, but have very badly sprained it. I have spent the last two days icing and keeping off the foot and keeping it up etc. The weather has thawed and I could just take pressure and walk with a little help, and no taxi available. I have an automatic car and felt able enough with the thaw to seek another opinion on the sprain. I felt it did not warrant going to Poole A&E, and the pressure there would probably be very high. Also, as there is parking at Wimborne MIU, I felt I could do the small distance easily. I wanted to seek advice, not use services I did not need and without too much risk take myself to the most appropriate place.

I am so disappointed, but Wimborne MIU is only open Monday to Friday working day times.

The NHS Dorset seems to be encouraging us to see MIUs to help the casualty services, and I don't understand why this service has such limited opening times? In the past I have used Swanage MIU and is a very good service 8-8 7 days a week. I now have returned and see Blandford MIU also has a WE service all be it not so late in the evening. Perhaps it is the near vicinity to Poole, people can go there so no need to staff Wimborne MIU? But, this defeats the object of the service and the advice we are being given to seek the MIUs when you don't need to go to casualty, but do have a minor injury to seek advice about. Please be aware others who might wish to use this service, that it is only in week day working hour times and go over to Swanage or to Bladford for out of hours, or very carefully check where is open out of hours. Sorry Wimborne this needs to be reviewed in the light of the changes in our casualty services locally.

Dear Pippa,

I am sorry you had a negative experience in regards to the Wimborne MIU, specifically the opening hours and the fact it is not open on weekends when you needed to access the MIU.

As you correctly pointed out, Poole Hospital A&E is within an acceptable commutable distance from Wimborne, although not helpful in your situation in regards to parking nor easy access with your injury. In addition to A&E, as again you correctly said,

Blandford MIU is also available on Saturday and Sunday and is normally (without snow) a reasonable distance from Wimborne. Also available is the Dorset HealthCare/SWAST Treatment Centre at St Leonards Hospital.

This is a bookable service through 111 and is open Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays from 9:00 AM-4:00PM.

Dorset HealthCare is currently working with the Clinical Commission Group, Acute Hospital Trusts and Primary Care to offer additional out-of-hour primary care appointments.

Although still in the early planning phase, it is hoped that this primary care service will be offered at Wimborne Hospital.

The service will be accessed through bookable appointments through your GP Practice or through 111 when the GP practice is closed.

It is envisioned that this service will operate Monday – Friday from 5:30 – 8:00 PM and on Saturdays from 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM.

We will update the Dorset HealthCare Website and NHS Choices when this service is available.

Although none of the above resolves your original concern, I hope it provides you with more context as to the reason why the Wimborne MIU hours are not the same as others, and provides you with additional information as to what is available to East Dorset on weekends and future plans.

I would be very happy to talk to you further if you would like to contact me on 01202 856437.

With best wishes

Annette Barrow, Matron
