"Treated like she was stupid"

About: Wythenshawe Hospital / Endocrinology

(as a relative),

A close relative was admitted to ward F12. The care on there was something to be desired. Shocking. She was treated as she didn’t know why she was there and what was going on. She was fully aware of the situation but treated otherwise. No one seemed to know why she was there and obviously were not looking at her notes at the time. The patient knew why she was there.   I was disgusted and saddened to see her being treated like she was stupid. Just because she’s elderly. She certainly isn’t, and was fully aware what was going on. I hope I never end up on a ward like that. I fully understand how busy the staff are. But that is no excuse for the treatment patients receive,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us about your experience at Manchester NHS Foundation Trust Wythenshawe Site via the Care Opinion Website. It is important to us that comments are received so that we can make changes and improvements to the services we provide wherever possible.

The poor communication and professionalism that you reported to have witnessed from staff members on Ward F12 is unacceptable, and does not reflect Manchester NHS Foundation Trust’s values and behaviours. The nursing team on Ward F12 pride themselves in delivering a high standard of individualised care to all their patients, and we are sorry that this fell below an acceptable standard.

We apologise you felt disgusted and saddened to see your relative being treated like they were stupid, as this clearly is not acceptable. Communication is important and we are all working hard to ensure that patients and their families are actively involved in care and treatment planning. Your concerns have also been raised directly with the team so that they can be made aware of your experience. It is difficult to respond to all the posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information, therefore if you would like to discuss this with us in more detail, please feel free to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk quoting reference number PO17/0404.
