What I liked
Ward 26, especially two members of staff who were always popping in to see her even when they were not on her section.
What could be improved
This is an update on our previous post. Our mother died in hospital last week. Main cause of death was Sepacemia and infected pressure ulcers aquired during her stay in hospital.
We still have had no answers to questions we raised at an official meeting a month ago. We asked why she was discharged with no splint on her broken leg and why horrible stage 4 pressure sores had been allowed to develope in such a short time. Dispite being promised answers the following day it is now a month with no response. We have phoned them, received promises they would contact us and nothing. The family are devastated that she was allowed to aquire and die of bed sores whilst in hospital care and want to move on. I understand PALS are now involved and this route takes longer but why have we not had answers or contact after nearly a month?
Throughout my mothers stay in Victoria Hospital we were constantly aware of the lack of continuality in her care due to the constant changing of staff. The many little things that are important to the patient and that are learnt by the nursing staff such as understanding her when she was finding it hard to talk or say she was in pain, knowing to speak up to her, or switch on her hearing aids as she was deaf, liking the window open, having her cuddly toy near her. Countless things, and this knowledge is all lost when a new nurse takes over.
