"I felt I was treated as a person with a problem that was important"

About: York Hospital / Plastic surgery

(as the patient),

Following a fall which resulted in a fracture to my left wrist I realised after the plaster was removed that I had lost the partial use of my hand, particularly the thumb and index finger. After some insistence on my part that not only was all not well, but I was also concerned that the resulting limitations were considerably affecting my lifestyle I was referred for an ultrasound scan. From that point on I felt I was no longer being treated like a silly grey haired old woman who ought to take to her slippers (O.K. my hair is grey but 74 isn't old!), but as an individual with a problem which was important to her.

At the ultrasound scan a very helpful Doctor listened to what I was saying and identified a snapped ligament which was restricting my movement. My thanks to her for taking the time to examine my hand thoroughly and forwarding my case to Mr Lim.

At my first meeting with Mr Lim I was able to explain that since retiring 20 years ago I was working as a professional crafter specialising in weaving and knitting; that I demonstrated and taught at events around the British Isles; in schools and to craft groups. I was no longer able to grasp the yarns firmly in my left hand or to manipulate them. This was the first time any one had asked why I was concerned at the limitations to my dexterity.

Mr Lim explained in detail what he may be able to do to restore as much function as possible and also referred me to Karl, senior physiotherapist, who again took time to listen to my concerns and advised me on a course of exercises to prepare me for surgery. Mr Lim again explained what the surgery entailed and possible outcomes before it took place.

The surgery was tremendously successful, and I was delighted to be able to give both Mr Lim and Karl the literal thumbs up on my follow up appointments.

My sincere thank to everyone at York District Hospital, conveniently on my doorstep, for their care and support. Particular thanks to Karl for his professional support, and most of all to Mr Lim who saw beyond the anxious and distressed grey haired not so old patient, and gave me back the ability to enjoy and share my skills.

Dear Craftylady

How wonderful to hear that the treatment and therapy you received has given you a new lease of crafting life. Thank you very much for sharing your experience. We will most certainly make sure that Karl and Mr Lim receive a copy of your kind words, which will mean a lot to them.

With very best wishes
