"Our NHS is full of wonderful people"

About: Sir Robert Peel Hospital

(as a service user),

I required surgery to remove and test two lumps from my chest wall. While it was minor surgery, I am petrified of blood, needles and surgery, despite working for the NHS, so I feared the whole process. However, from the day I saw the consultant at Queens, through to coming around from surgery at Robert Peel every staff member I encountered made me feel safe and cared for. I wasn't ever made to feel silly for getting upset and panicked.

The Ward Nurse and Assistant made every effort to make me feel settled, taking time to talk me through things and answer any questions I had. The anaesthetist detected my fear and offered to sedate me before inserting the cannula, such a small gesture which relieved so much stress and worry.

The team also put me first on the surgery list to prevent me having to wait and worry about the procedure.

In the recovery room I was being cared for my a lovely lady who, in my semi-conscious state, was talking to me about my long term boyfriend who at that time still hadn't proposed after 8 years. She bought a smile to my face when the first thing she asked me was 'Why don't you ask him'? I had no idea what she was talking about until she kindly filled me in that I was talking all about him as I regained consciousness. I'd like to say there must be some magic in that room because we are now engaged.

My only negative feedback is that one of the lumps wasn't removed during surgery. I have since logged this with my GP who has offered to arrange the surgery again, however, given the fears I mentioned above I have declined.

Our NHS is full of wonderful people, I expected nothing less but was still completely overwhelmed by the kind, personalised care I received from the team at Robert Peel. My operation was in early October, (Burton, if you are able to) please share this to the team who were on duty

Many thanks.
