"too pushy"

About: Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

(as a service user),

its hard to get my point across, but it just feels like staff like controlling the situation, and avoid dealing with my needs and wishes.

The other day i was meeting my psychiatrist and they had a medical student sitting in with them. I think it would have been basic manners if my psychiatrist told me this before I entered the room. Instead, I found myself faced with a teammate. I guess they didn't move, because they did not know how to remove themselves from the situation. Meanwhile I was put on the spot and did not feel able to ask them to leave.

My consultant then went on to say drug X was the best for me. I said i was not ready for medication, and then they said that if i was uncompliant it would reflect badly professionally if i want to pursue my particular chosen career. I am not currently a professional, I am a student, and feel I was pushed into a situation with an unwanted medical student, and then pushed to accept drugs without time to think!

Also you may want to remind medical students about their limitations. The medical student and I are on the same sports team. It is election time, and they said I should not run for any positions due to my mental health condition. I wouldn't mind if they cared, but we are competing for the same position.

All this could have been avoided if the consultant thought about asking. Maybe next years students should be made to think about how they will deal with people they know, if they encounter them as a medical student

Dear Daffodil1234

Apologies that it has taken a while to get back to you regarding your concerns.

I'm not able to comment directly on your reflections of the psychiatrists behaviour during your appointment but I can say that the behaviours that we expect from every member of our staff is that they consider the feelings, needs and rights of others at all times. If you don't feel that this has happened and you wish to discuss your experience of this further then it may help initially to make contact with our PALS team on 08000525790 or email palslypft@nhs.net

In relation to medical students, I have spoken to the undergraduate medical education coordinator. As a learning point, she was pleased that you have raised your observations and experiences with us and stated that your suggestion that we ensure we discuss what students should do in this kind of setting in advance is helpful and advice that she will take forward with the next cohort of students. She also felt that this was applicable outside mental health also and so will discuss within the Year 4 Course Management Team to address.

I hope you find the response helpful and we have certainly taken on board the comments you have made to improve the learning of future and current students.

With kind regards
