My mother recently was on the kinmonth ward at LRI. I stayed with her a lot so saw a lot happening (although probably heard more than saw). She had a very nice (but small) room in her own. The cleaners were very good. You do feel a bit isolated in a single room, nurses came in regularly to check in her. Most of them were friendly and chatty. The doctors were excellent and very professional. My mum really liked the doctors and found it easy to talk to them.
I think what staff need to remember though that as a visitor sat with my mum, I could hear lots of conversations going on outside her room, as the door was usually open. This wasn't a problem, but I do wish the staff were all kind to each other. I would often hear a nurse (I think she was in charge) telling off doctors if they didn't clean their hands - I get that they need telling but she didn't do it in a very nice way and she obviously didn't care that I could hear. Sometimes I heard her being stern with other people (I presume nurses but I couldn't see). I just think people need to remember that those in private rooms can hear what is going on and nurses in charge should set an example.
Staff were very flexible with me visiting mum which was very good of them. I did notice if there were lots of visitors some were asked to wait outside the main ward door. This was sometimes a bit difficult to get in and out when lots of people stood there. I think this could be a fire hazard if there were a fire or some other emergency.
