"Taught me relaxation"

About: Strathcarron Hospice / Day Care Service

(as a service user),

I have been going to Strathcarron for day care for 4 yours now and I am so happy with it.  My wife lives in a home so my day care really makes a difference to me.

They have taught me relaxation which I do most days when I am there.  I can now go into relaxation myself which really helps me in other ways.  I had to go to hospital for two biopsies one on each side of my head.  When they did the right side it was so painful and I was so uncomfortable.  Then I remembered my relaxation techniques so I used this when they were doing the left side.  I fell asleep.....  The staff said it was a more difficult biopsy on the left but because I had managed to be relaxed it had made it easier for us both.   Now when I am in pain I can place my hand on the sore area and go into relaxation. Usually I fall asleep and when I wake the pain is gone...  Some of the other men at day care were saying they thought relaxation was cissy but I told them it was totally not and how it helps me.  They are giving it a try.

I find it so good to share my worries at Day care with staff and other day care patients.  The staff are excellent and everyone right through to the people who serve tea and coffee are great.  Everyone is treated the same.

I have been getting help with my ears and after some treatment i felt a pop this morning and could hear my fridge for the first time in a long time.

Hello! Thank you for posting such a positive story about our Day Service and telling everyone how much you get from it – and still do, after 4 years of attendance. I am especially pleased to hear how you have learned to use relaxation techniques to help ease your pain as well as it helping in other situations that have the potential to be difficult. Self-management is a key skill in helping us to feel in control of our own well-being and it sounds like you have totally perfected the skill of relaxation in order to improve your experience of pain and cope with other situations. The Complementary Therapy Team will be delighted to know how valuable it has been to you, that they had taught you these techniques and the ways in which you can best use them. Am also really pleased to hear you have shared those positive benefits to your friends in Day Care and it sounds like you are doing a good job in converting them to the power of self-management through relaxation! It will be a bonus for you am sure if they tell you it they have tried it and it has helped them and you have therefore helped others.

I will let the Day Care staff and volunteers know how much you benefit from coming to Day Care and that you feel so well supported and able to share your concerns. I am sorry that your wife is no longer at home with you and am sure being in separate places means you miss being able to share certain things with her when you are at home.

Ps – delighted to read that you have had such a dramatic improvement to your hearing….hope all sorts of new hearing pleasures open up to you now!

Many thanks again for taking the time to share your story, we very much appreciate it.

Lesley
