With the birth of our son in February 2018, the Royal Surrey County Hospital had the experience and capability to go with our birthing plan. VBAC but for a breech baby. We felt listened to, and well looked after by a friendly and coordinated team. Our previous experience at another hospital had left us both worried about a likely impending planned c-section. But the consultants and midwives we had discussions with were generally very sensitive to our fears, and did everything they could to help us. On the day we got exactly what we had hoped for -- for which we are immensely grateful to all those that helped. That team of doctors and nurses were amazing, and made us feel safe, even in the riskier situation.
I'd also like to state, from a Dad's perspective. That I was very happy to be given the chance to stay the night at the hospital, and would definitely wish this experimental service to continue. Other Dads I'm sure will agree, that you are often the lowest priority on a maternity ward -- if you are catered for at all. But it makes all the difference in the world (especially at stressful times) when your comfort and wishes have also been thought about. At Royal Surrey I was lucky enough to have a reclining chair, to be offered drinks and given blankets. All meaning I could stay to look after my partner, and our new born.
This again differs greatly from my previous experience of having to abandon a paralyzed and upset partner with our upset new born daughter. The previous nursing staff did all they could, but the hospital policy was I had to leave, so that was what happened.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Royal Surrey to other prospective parents.
