"Shocking Treatment (or the lack thereof)"

About: Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust

My daughter attended the Endoscopy Department to undergo the removal of a gallstone from her CBD on the morning of 19 February 2018.

The procedure went reasonably well and she returned to the recovery area at approximately 12:30, which is where it all started to go down hill.

My daughter was vomiting at regular intervals and this delayed her discharge until 16:15.

They put this down to a sensitivity to the pethadone used and said that if the sickness did not ease within a couple of hours then she should return to A&E as per her discharge advice sheet.

At 8 o’clock she was still in some discomfort and the vomiting had continued unabated so we decided to follow the advice and go to A&E.

We got there at 9pm and are still waiting to see a doctor some 51/2 hours later, with no indication of when that is likely to be.

My daughters pain level increased from 2 to 8 on a scale of 10 and has only had 300ml of fluids in the past 30 hours.

Pain relief was given just after midnight but the level has returned to its original high.

Almost the worst thing is the lack of information on what is happening / likely to happen in terms of when you are likely to be able to see a doctor.

You are also made to fell it is a criminal offence to ask for any type of information.

Finally got to see a doctor at 3:20.

We have now been told that my daughter has pancreatitis with quite a high degree of associated pain for which morphine can be prescribed and she will need to be admitted.

That’s more than six hours of pain without an acceptable pain relief regime being administered.

Shocking.

We have in the past been very appreciative and thankful for the service and dedication of RUH staff.

Sadly on this occasion the standards exhibited by your A&E staff have fallen woefully short of what one is entitled to expect, put my daughters health at risk and left her in a great deal of pain for a lot longer than she needed to be.

Shame on you.

It is now 4:15 some 50 minutes since the doctor advised the morphine and yet my daughter is still waiting for per pain relief as there appears to be no one who can administer it.

It just gets worse.
