in December I was referred by Grimsby hospital to have surgery for retinal detachment. I was seen immediately and all the staff were very efficient and supportive during the tests beforehand. The staff nurse was wonderful and explained the procedure in great detail and answered my questions which put me at ease. I then had a discussion with the anaesthetist who iwas very friendly and had a little chat . I had my surgery same day and in the recovery room was looked after by the staff who brought me a welcome drink and gluten free biscuits plus a warm blanket to keep me warm. The nurse had arranged for myself and my husband to stay in patient accommodation overnight instead of on the ward so I felt more comfortable with my husband there as I was feeling a little nauseous in the night. We even had sandwiches sent to the accommodation, we felt very looked after by everyone.
The operation went well and I returned home the following day with verbal advice on what to expect and about posturing correctly, plus I was given written information leaflets about my condition with contact numbers in case I needed advice. I did ring on a couple of occasions for advice when I was concerned about my eye and my appointment was brought forward so that I could see the consultant earlier where my mind was put at rest.
My gas bubble has now disappeared and feel so grateful to the surgeon that I gave sight in my eye again. I cannt praise all the staff enough from the nurses who do the preliminary checks through to the consultant, I felt that I was treated with respect and was involved all along the way and given clear information that I could understand.
I would definitely recommend Sheffield ophthalmology department , in fact I have told my friends and NHS colleagues in Grimsby what a brilliant service I received.
