My husband received surgery for cancer of the mouth. We were both involved in clinical decisions, and supported by an accessible Macmillan nurse. The surgeon was honest, but encourageing at every stage. He exhibited exceptional skill in operating at thei sensitive and difficult area of the body which involved tissue grafting.
The hospital itself is operating under incredibly difficult conditions as building work continues over a period of years, and finding one's way around (as a visitor) was difficult. Nevertheless the staff were always helpful and consciencious., particularly in the high dependency unit where my husband spent five days. We were there at a time when the NHS was reporting overcrowding, understaffing and major delays to admission and treatment and I can honestly say there were no signs of this at the Royal Sussex.
I have known a number of hospitals over a lifetime. The running of this one, especially considering it's currently a major building site, is exceptional in our experience.
