"Communication Please"

About: Heartlands Hospital / General surgery

My mom was admitted in January with vomiting with blood loss.

Admittance in A and E was very good and she was kept well informed, sent to a ward where she received good care, but was not always kept informed of what the Care Plan was needed a Hernia Operation Urgently but sent home as she was not fit to have it after 12 days of liquid only, home for about a week and a half, had to call Paramedics out as she was ill again and very week should have been built up at home with nasal food drip or kept in hospital, finally had Hernia operation, patients very ill informed and seems to be a lack of communication between Doctors all the time, today after another 10 days in hospital said she could be discharged at 11am after waiting for prescription till 8pm they are ready to discharge a 74 year old lady into the dark really shouldn't be sending people home this late.

Dear Dotty,

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments regarding your mother’s treatment at Heartlands Hospital.

I am sorry that your mother felt that there was a lack of communication regarding her care plan and the communication between the doctors.

I am also sorry there was a lengthy delay in your mother receiving her medication to take home, which resulted in leaving the hospital at 8pm.

I appreciate that was not an ideal situation for your mother.

If you would be willing to provide further details such as your mother’s name, address, date of birth and a contact number for you, as a Trust, we would welcome the opportunity to review her care.

You can do this by contacting a member of the Patient Services Team on 0121 424 0808 or you can email your concerns to bhs-tr.Complaints-ConcernsandCompliments@nhs.net who can then take the necessary action.

If you do contact our team, can I please ask you to advise the member of staff that you are responding to your NHS Choices Posting.

I am pleased that you felt the care your mother received in A&E was good and that she was kept well informed.

I shall forward your posting to the senior management teams for General Surgery and A&E and ask that it is shared with the staff, so they are aware of your comments.

Once again, thank you for your posting.

All feedback is important to us, whether it is negative or positive, as this helps the Trust to improve our services and make changes where necessary.

We continually strive to improve our service for all patient’s and visitors.

Best wishes

Miss J. Langham

Patient Services Officer
