"Inadequate care for relatives and poor..."

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

Our main hospital is a leading teaching hospital in the UK. I am sorry to say that not all NHS institutes live up to the high standards that I am used to. I also work for this hospital and try to ensure good care for not only patients but their relatives and visitors also. My sister recently visited your hospital with her partner for a routine operation. Not only on arriving where they informed that the surgery had been moved from morning to afternoon without prior notice, they also showed poor communication skills. I received a phone call from my sister in tears as the nurses had told her that they did not have a recovery ward and did not know where her partner would be taken to after his op. I would also find this distressing and am disgusted that this was all they could offer her. No care was given to her, and not one staff member asked her if she was Okay?! Just because she is not a patient does not mean she is not worried or upset! They then did not give her any directions on where she could go while waiting for the op to finish which I just find rude. Also they have been told that there are no lifts in the hospital, so after day surgery this poor patient is expected to walk down the stairs to get home?! Inadequate facilities, poor staff communication and uncaring atmosphere. Come on people we're supposed to be the fore front of the NHS!!!

Dear Anonymous,

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment on behalf of your sister. I was surprised to read some of the elements of her experience and disappointed that there were a number of communication processes which clearly failed. I have alerted the team who manage theatres of your concerns and they would be very grateful if you would ask your sister to make contact to establish exactly what has happened here. There are lifts next to theatres, there is certainly a recovery area and a ward patients go to after recovery and a number of places to wait if a member of your family is in theatre. Please do pass on my apologies to your sister and ask her to get in contact.

The number to call is 01279 827211 or please email pals@pah.nhs.uk and we will do everything we can to prevent a recurrence of this event.
