"A&e department is disgusting"

About: Tameside General Hospital / Accident and emergency

So I was referred by my gp to come straight up to see a surgeon due to some bleeding I had that wasn't stopping . To then be told I had to sit in a&e and could be there longer than anyone bare in mind there was about 60 people in there as the surgeon I was seing wasn't based in a&e ... this hospital is disgusting there was no seating left there was people lying on the floors taking up 4 chairs to lie across the receptionists kept having to come out and ask visitors who was with someone and not a patient to stand and let patients sit to which they didn't !! Also there was a younge girl who came in throwing up in a pan she came with from home lying across the floor it was dirty there was drinks and good spilt everywhere not 1 cleaning came through in the whole few hours I was there what a disgrace! I wouldn't even use the toilets I will and would never recommend this a&e the smell was unbearable but ... I will say the care of the staff was ok and are doing the best they can and doing a great job ! This a&e needs a revamp maybe a children's section separate like stepping hill could improve things and help some serious consideration is in need to here !

We are really sorry you have had cause to post these comments about your recent experience.

We take patient concerns very seriously and we can only improve if we know what is going wrong from a patient’s perspective.

When patients are referred by their GP, it is normal practice for the Doctor of whichever speciality they’re referred too to see the patients and assess them in A&E. The surgeons have a list of patients to see who have been referred by their GP within the Tameside & Glossop district and A&E Doctor’s at the Trust. Each patient is seen in order along with the other referrals they have received that day. We apologise if this was not communicated appropriately with you on the day.

Please be assured that the Trust, there has a Paediatric Emergency Department adjacent to the Adults Emergency Department. However, this has to be accessed through the Adults Department and on occasions, children will be triaged from the main waiting room.

The level of cleanliness you report is not acceptable and we will bring this to the attention of the clinical leads for all shifts.

Thank you for your positive comments about the staff doing a good job. Your comments and concerns have been fed back to the department and team overseeing the Emergency Department for them to share with the relevant members of staff.
