"NSECH Emergency Department"

About: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

I can't explain how furious I am with the care my 81 year old father received at NSECH. The staff avoided coming in to the room and were seen constantly talking about "TV shows" at the nurses station whilst my father was lay in bed with a gaping wound on his head. We arrived at the Emergency Department at 22:00 and my father wasn't stitched up until 06:00 the following morning. I had to remind staff that my father still had a cannula still in his arm. The staff arranged transport at 06:00 and didn't make an effort to find out how long the ambulance was going to be. My father suffers from Lewy Body Dementia which makes him extremely restless in situations like this. The staff didn't offer water and didn't offer to toilet him, not once. It got to 09:00 and we decided we would have to transport my father in our car to get him home which was extremely hard.

Apart from one male nurse who we had seen had the start of the night who changed my Dad and took his bloods, and the ambulance staff; the entire trip to the department was an absolute joke. Disgusting!

Dear Gemma,

I am so sorry to read about your father’s and your experience with us recently. It is very sad to hear that his time in the department caused you both so much distress which perhaps could have been avoided, for this I am deeply sorry. I would like to look into this further for you, I see that you have contacted us via our email, I will respond to your email with the information that I need that will allow us to investigate.

I understand that saying sorry may not make how you feel better and it will not change the experience that you both had; but please be assured that I will be sharing this with the Emergency Care team to learn from and try ensure that this sort of experience does not happen again.

Kind regards,

Jan,

Jan Hutchinson – Service Improvement Lead
