On 29th December, I was referred to A&E by my GP with suspected appendicitis. I didn't have to wait too long in A&E before I was transferred to the Adult Assessment Unit. Here I was treated with first class care, being regularly advised of the next stage of my treatment. Each clinician introduced themselves and explained their role. Following a scan, it was confirmed that I had appendicitis and I was informed that I would be transferred to the surgical ward for an operation either that day or the following day. I was given a seat in the AAU waiting room and relaxed as I watched TV for an hour or so as a bed was found for me.
Around 7pm, I was taken along to the surgical ward, I had a choice of beds ( I chose one next to the window!), and even though the evening meal had been served some time before, I was provided with something to eat and a hot drink. At this stage, I was advised that the operation would be carried out the following day. The excellent care continued through the night as I was monitored on a regular basis.
Nil by mouth the following day, leading up to my operation in the early afternoon. The surgeon and anaesthetist both took the time to explain the procedure which was really helpful, as I had never had an operation or stayed in hospital.
Back from the operation around 5pm, soon tucking in to poached salmon (very good). Throughout the night the staff again kept monitoring me, asking me how I felt.
During breakfast the following day, I was given an extensive menu from which I could chose lunch and dinner!
The surgeon came along on his rounds and had a conversation with me, explaining how the operation went and a few recommendations for the following weeks. He advised me that I could go home that afternoon, after another 2 doses of anti-biotics.
Later that afternoon, I was given a bag of meds and discharged.
I didn't pay for this service as a private patient, this was the NHS, the same NHS that is so often criticized. The staff were, without exception, excellent. The care I received was first class.
I really can't thank all the team on the Surgical Ward enough.
With painkillers and fluids being administered regularly, I was made very comfortable
"Excellent Sevice"
