"Major injuries nurse questioning patients"

About: Royal Surrey County Hospital / Accident and emergency

The care my daughter received was excellent BUT while waiting to be seen in major injuries the same nurse on two separate occasions sat down in the waiting area to ask patients personal medical questions. The First Lady patient was visibly very uncomfortable to be answering questions as even I sitting across the way heard that she thought she was having a miscarriage and eventually asked if the questions could be asked in a more private space. She was then taken to a room. The same nurse came back later and questioned an elderly male patient who has heart problems. His daughter asked if it was normal to ask personal medical questions in front of other waiting patients and the answer from the nurse was a curt yes. The man replied that he had been in the hospital several times and this was not normal- the nurse just carried on and went through his box of medication he had with him. While I appreciate that space is a premium how can it possibly be ok to ask medical details from patients in front of other waiting patients - on both occasions the room which my daughter and I were taken to was empty and was in fact the same room the flaky with the miscarriage was taken to by the nurse when she said she wanted a private area. It was as if it was too much effort for that nurse to take the patients out of the waiting room - all other nurses/medical staff called the patients and took them to private rooms.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your recent experience at Royal Surrey County Hospital.

It is reassuring to read that you were pleased with the treatment and care your daughter received.

We are sorry to read that the behaviour of the nurse in our Emergency department does not appear to be of the high standard that we aspire to.

Please email us at rsc-tr.communications@nhs.net so that we may investigate.

We value all feedback so thank you for taking the time to let us know your thoughts.
