Our 9-year-old daughter fell and landed awkwardly on her knee at home. The pain she was in was such that we ended up calling the ambulance service after observing and trying to calm her down ourselves - she could not bear to be moved and could not bend her injured leg so taking her to A& E on our own seemed impossible after a couple of unsuccessful attempts. Within 30 minutes, a fantastic paramedic called Steve (I think! ) arrived at our house to assess her. Steve was able to gently examine her and coax her to move her leg, to the point where it was clear nothing was broken or dislocated. However, he never made light of the very real pain she was obviously feeling, and when he found out that she had broken a collar bone previously he explained that this previous experience was likely making her more anxious about a similar thing happening again. As parents who have never called an ambulance before, and are very aware of the limited resources of the health service, we felt somewhat embarrassed about having had a paramedic attend 'for nothing' - but Steve put us at ease over this as well. The injured knee is all sorts of shades of purple so it must have taken a bash - but daughter went to school happy enough this morning. We could not be more grateful for the help we received and the kind, funny and expert manner of the person who helped us.
"Paramedic did a brilliant job"
