"Excellent hospital, clean wards and caring staff."

About: York Hospital / Vascular surgery

I had the 'misfortune' of being admitted due to developing gangrene and after suffering for 3 months and trying several treatments unsuccessfully I finally underwent a forefoot amputation on ward 11.

The ward was spotlessly clean thanks to a dedicated and invisible cleaning staff who came round twice each day and cleaned the toilet and bedside tables and under the beds and window sills.

They emptied the bins and mopped the floors.

I was admitted in July 2015 and it was hot!

The hospital was having some building work done and that created a lot of dust, especially as we had the windows open to try and keep the room cool.

Most of the nursing staff on the ward were cheerful and helpful.

As it was a vascular ward all the patients (in my room) slept with painful limbs sticking out of the end of the bed or hanging over the edge of the bed, but the nurses were very understanding of our pain and conditions.

Several nurses especially stood out and went above and beyond the call of duty to care for the patients on the ward.

The food in York in excellent and far exceeds that in Harrogate or Leeds (sorry, but you said to write an honest review).

There is a massive menu choice and even as a vegetarian you could easily have something different for each meal for a couple of weeks.

It is healthy food too and not "stodge".

Compliments to the kitchen staff.

It comes up in a heated trolley and the ward staff plate it up, so you can have a small portion (or a large one!)

On ward 11 the vascular team work together, rather than in teams, so you could see a different consultant each day but they would know all about you and the 'junior' doctors, who are very experienced, would have filled the consultant in so you always felt in safe hands.

If your consultant was in theatre all day and clinic the next day, you weren't left in limbo, no pun intended, not getting reviewed for days on end.

There is a chance I may be requiring the services of the staff on ward 11 again, but I would have no trepidation or concern in going back or recommending them to family or friends should they unfortunately require their services ever in the future.

Thank you very much for your kind comments expressing satisfaction around the care and treatment you received in July 15 on Ward 11 and also by the Domestic and Catering Teams

We have passed on your kind comments to the Senior managers to share with the members of their teams.
