I attended the minor injuries unit as I had a sudden onset of pain in my right first metacarpal phalageal joint. This particular joint has previously had a sporting injury. I informed the receptionist of the pain I was experiencing and that it has limited the movement and strength of my thumb. She rudly informed me that this was a minor injuries unit that only deals with injuries upon hearing that I could not identify a mechanism of injury to this joint. She was not interested in anything else I had to say subsequently. I personally work as a doctor in a DGH hospital and prior to attending I assessed my injury and felt that I needed to rule out a bony injury. (i know soft tissue injury is treated with analgesia). To rule out a bony inury requires an x-ray of the hand to be taken. Easiest and most appropriate way would be at an minor injuries unit. Otherwise it will only either waste a GP appointment time who will send me to hosptial for an x-ray or worse waste time at A&E. I felt very insulted that a receptionist who is not medically trained in any way felt that she could perform an on the spot medical assessment of my injury without any proper history taking or examination. This is extremely dangerous as if I wasn't medically trained myself I would have just accepted her order and not sought further medical help. After this encounter, I called NHS 111 helpline to gain advise and they have actually informed me I should be attending my local minor injuries unit for help. Thus the receptionist was clearly wrong in her prejudgement of my situation! This is unacceptable behaviour even if the NHS is pressured as her actions would actually result in a greater cost of NHS resources in order to treat a very simple matter!
"Poor attitude of receptionist"
