About: Lanarkshire Community Services / GP Out of Hours service Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance University Hospital Wishaw / Endoscopy University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I broke my femur recently  as I was climbing the stairs to go to bed.

I managed to grab onto the handrail and sit down on a step but the pain in my leg and knee was excruciating. I eventually managed to drag myself into the top landing and my family covered me with a duvet and tried to make me comfortable with pillows.

The NHS GP came out and wanted me to go to hospital, unfortunately he left without giving me any pain relief, his reason being if my leg wasn’t sore when I got to the hospital they would send me home.

The ambulance came eventually and I was given gas and air immediately. It took around an hour for me to bump my way down the stairs supported by the crew. They were so patient and helpful. All in all, I think it was just over 5 hours between injury and arriving at Wishaw General.

From the ambulance crew arriving until I was discharged a few days later, I received excellent care from everyone. The staff in A&E calmed me down and expedited me into Ward 15 following an x-ray.

I saw a consultant, Mr Crane, in the ward within 4 hours of arriving at the hospital. How can anyone complain about this service?

The ward staff were all patient, efficient and friendly. I also found the same when I was moved to Ward 14. The physios, OTs, clinical support and porters too.  Mr MacDonald, (consultant who operated on me), took over my case, I am very grateful for everything he did for me.

I have been overwhelmed this week at the efficiency of the “NHS machine” in action. I understand that it is normally negative stories which are reported in the media but I felt it was very important for me to say thank you and well done considering my experience.

Each and everyone who I came into contact with is a credit to their profession.

Hi EllaD,

Thank you very much for sharing your story on Care Opinion. I am sorry to read that you have fractured your femur. That must have been hugely painful and uncomfortable. It is good to read that you have such good support around you with your family making you comfortable. I am also very encouraged to read about the kind words you have said about our crew and our partners in NHS Scotland. It sounds like it was quite a challenging time for everyone in your house.

I would really like to make sure these comments get shared with crew that attended you as I feel it is important to make sure they know how much you appreciate their work. If you would like to do so, you can email me at scotamb.corporateaffairs@nhs.net and let me know your name, address and the date we were at your house.

I wish you a speedy recovery EllaD and thank you again.

Kind Regards

Alan

Hello EllaD,

Firstly I hope you are recovering well. Your injury sounded so painful!

I am so grateful to you for taking the time to write to us to praise the care you recieved.

My role is managing Soft Services in University Hospital Wishaw and the Portering department is part of that service. I will make sure your kind comments are passed onto the Porters and their managers. Being part of the 'NHS Machine' sounds really cool too!

Take care and continue to get better

Kindest Regards
