I brought my 63 year old Mother to A&E following a nasty fall on the ice where she had hurt her arm and shoulder.
After being seen by the doctor and an x-ray later it was determined that she had broken her shoulder, fractured humerus to be precise.
Despite this and the fact that she couldn't sit up straight or stop shaking from the pain she was sent away with in tears with her arm in a flimsy, loose fabric sling, no prescription for pain killers and told she couldn't attend a fracture clinic for 13 days!
We asked at reception if this could be improved or if they had any advice on how to help the pain or set the arm correctly in a more substantial sling, to which we were told nothing can be done, it was the earliest appointment available and to go to the pharmacy and get some co-codamol.
My mother could hardly walk out of A&E and hasn't been able to sit or lay since without excruciating pain. We have since called the local doctor where they advised to buy our own sling then revisit A&E for them to advise how best to position the arm so it doesn't heal in the wrong position, needless to say it wont be Pontefract A&E where we seek this advice.
"Sent away with a broken shoulder with no help..."
