Following a prior diagnosis of probable cancer of the prostate, I attended Lister Hospital for a planned biopsy, on a day patient basis. I thus went through the system of Admission Unit and Day Surgery Centre, including the checking-in room, and subsequently the pre-op room, the theatre, and post-op (recovery) area. I so had close contact with perhaps a dozen members of staff, doctors, nurses etc. At all times all these workers were friendly, professional and helpful. The high standard of personal care was consistently impressive. At a systems level, I would have 2 minor criticisms: first, for a naive and nervous patient like me, it would have been useful to have had this process explained at the start. And second, given that there was a known wait of at least nearly 2 hours (and in the event about 4 hours), did I have to get dressed into my surgery gown quite so promptly? Overall, I remain grateful and even in a little awe of the sheer excellent quality of such NHS care.
