"I felt like I was on holiday!"

About: Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital

What I liked

I was treated at the Spencer Wing (a private wing on the hospital grounds) under the NHS Choose and Book system. I was under an incredibly knowledgable and effective consultant gynaecologist who is employed by QEtQM Hospital. From the moment we arrived for the pre-op I was treated with care and compassion. Every memeber of staff I encountered was professional and friendly. I then had an MRI scan at the main hospital and again was met by very professional staff. The MRI waiting room was clean and my only gripe was that the nearest available toilet was pretty much on the other side of the hospital! The staff in the MRI suite were friendly and did everything they could to put me at ease. I was able to listen to music when I had the scan done, and all in all it was a good experience (as hospital visists go!).

On the day of the operation I was collected from reception by a friendly porter who showed me to my (private) room. The room was clean and very comfortable with an en suite bathroom and tv. My husband stayed in a Travelodge nearby as we are not local and my room was far superior - I even had toiletries which my husband's room did not!

The food was good, with a huge breakfast and fresh iced water in the morning.

The clinical side of my treatment was faultless, and I feel like I am reviewing a hotel which is exactly how it felt to stay at the Spencer Wing. I cannot rate it highly enough, and feel very privileged that I was able to be treated there on the NHS.

What could be improved

I think 22 out of 23 beds were occupied overnight the night I stayed, and it seemed that they were slightly short staffed. A nurse on the day shift went to get my painkillers, but these didn't come and I had to chase it up with the night turn.
