"Unsatisfactory, Unnecesary Wait, Incomplete..."

About: King's College Hospital (Denmark Hill) / Ophthalmology

I was extremely disappointed when I attended yesterday (29/01/18) arriving on time for my 11am appointment.

After waiting an hour I went to the desk to enquire when I would be seen for the eye test that is usually done before seeing the doctor.

The lady who had checked me in left for lunch as I approached the desk so the man assisted me.

He took my form from the box behind him (the lady had incorrectly put it there so nobody was going to attend to me at any time).

He apologised and was unable to explain why she had done that, went and spoke to staff and said I would be seen soon.

I was seen soon after for an eye test, scan and visual fields.

I was then called and taken to the same room where I had had the scan.

The doctor (I don't know what his title was) asked me "have I been here before".

I was surprised and even said to him that the reason I was surprised is because he should know that and I am a long-term patient here.

I asked him what am I doing here and he said for the scan.

I explained that I had already had the scan and was waiting to see the doctor.

He was unable to explain why I had been recalled for the scan.

So yet another wait before I saw the doctor who I was extremely disappointed in and this does need some action as I am not satisfied that (a) he only checked my pressures, he never done anything else.

Every time I've been to the clinic they've checked my pressures, looked in my eyes, asked me questions.

He done none of this.

I handed him the letter I had been given when I attended Western Eye Hospital (the Trust I work for) dated 18/01/18 which clearly states that I had a subdural haemorrhage in my right eye and they had changed my eye drops and that this appointment was the two week appointment I had arranged at Western Eye's request on the said letter.

I showed him a picture of how my eye had looked.

My eye is still not completely free of blood and does feel a bit lazy.

There was a student in the room and the doctor didn't take the courtesy to introduce or ask me if I minded. He hurriedly told me that the results of my scan and visual field were fine, done the pressure check (which I asked what they were and he said 19 and 20) and gave me the slip for an appointment in 6 month's time.

He asked absolutely no questions in relation to the haemorrhage.

I'm not satisfied with this so called consultation which was not thorough or complete.

Please get back to me on this.

I will raise it with Complaints if I don't hear from you as I think it is too important to leave unanswered.

Thanks kindly.

Thank you for your comments. I am very sorry to hear that your experience was not up to the standards that we would expect.

I would like to put you in touch with the manager of our ophthalmology service at Denmark Hill as I am sure they would wish to discuss the issues that you raise in more detail.

I would be very happy to facilitate this.

You can email me at jessica.bush@nhs.net or phone 020 3299 4618.
