"Surgery Cancelled"

About: Neurosciences (DCN) / Neurosurgery

(as the patient),

Start from the beginning I have suffered for about 3 years with back and leg scaticic pain only in the last year has my leg scatica pain got worse so bad I barely walk some days.  after months at GPS neurologist visits I finally got a mri that showed I had a herniated disc so I met the surgeon in September who agreed to surgery (microdiscectomy) but said I would be on a waiting list and it would most likely be January a would get the surgery at Edinburgh Western General Hospital.  in October last year got my letter for my pre op which was the December 2017 and also had my admission date for January.  The day before I was due to be admitted a was called to say it was cancelled due to a bed crisis.   a was very upset by this but understanding as I know how busy the NHS can get.  was called again the next day at 9. 40pm at night and told to fast and that I would be operated on tmrw and to call about 10. 30am to get a time to come in.   so I was all organised.  again called to then find out it had been cancelled again this time I was extremely upset as hardly slept for worrying about the operation and had to phone about the night before to rearrange lifts and get help organised for my daughter etc.   then was called again that night to reschedule for the next again day, again was told to call in the morning only to be told they were rescheduling the surgery for the following week.   so again organised transport sorted care for my daughter again was called at the weekend to say it was cancelled again.   the nurse was very sorry on the phone and explained they had been extremely busy with flu and bed crisis and we're now only doing clinical and emergency and she could not give me anymore information.

since then I have called the hospital left messages and just keep getting told they are going day by day can't give me a date.  then called again was told most likely to be end January beginning February.   called hospital again today only to find out my surgeon won't be in the hospital for several weeks and they have no idea when I will get another date.   this is total shocking.  a feel a have just been left in lurch not knowing what's happening.  am now off my work sick because I can't do my job as I'm in so much pain.  am stuck in the house, been stuck in the house since the 28th December as I can't walk far without being in pain.  am not sleeping at night can't get comfortable at all am on a very high dose of medication that makes me drowsy and zoned out.   a Just feel like the hospital has not even bothered about me at all, a have been the one to chase them up.  a have no idea what to do now and how long a am going to have to wait and suffer.   a do understand that emergencies come first and there can be problems with staffing and beds and budgets etc in the NHS but all it takes is a letter or a phone call to a patient to explain and at least give them some sort of hope that there surgery will be rescheduled in how ever many weeks.   it's the not knowing what's happening and why this has happened and if my surgeon can't fit me into their schedule.   is there not another hospital or surgeon that can do my surgery I live in Falkirk we have a big modernised forth valley hospital why can't I have there instead of Edinburgh western General hospital.
