I was treated with respect, kindness and understanding by every member of staff involved in my care (that is, bar one). Everything that was going to happen was explained to me by the surgeon and anesthetist before the surgery, which was important to me as I knew that it wasn't going to be a straightforward procedure. The nurses from the time I arrived at the day ward to the time I left were so kind and caring and made sure that I was comfortable when it came to pain control and any food and drink requirements.
Sadly, there was an incident which I found degrading, painful and embarrassing. I had to have a catheter fitted which two nurses then two doctors were unable to do, they were very apologetic and called for a more senior doctor to attend. He was exactly the opposite to all the other staff I'd seen before, he was rough in his treatment and seemed to be unhappy about something. I found the whole incident painful, embarrassing and uncaring. He raised his voice and spoke to me disrespectfully, this meant that all the other patients and their visitors heard everything that went on. I really think that this kind of procedure should be carried out somewhere other than the ward. This is why I scored a low mark for dignity and respect.
"Gall bladder removal."
