"Great medical staff shame about the management"

About: Stepping Hill Hospital / General surgery

I was admitted for bowel cancer, however having been called in and had pre surgical treatment and put on a drip I was told in the morning that no high dependency bed was available, and discharged, 3 days later I was in considerable pain and went to A &E, they gave me pain kilers after a considerable wait, I had the operation 3 days later. I wish the senior management could go through this and perhaps the hospital would be properly rescourced.

I'm so sorry that you needed to wait longer for surgery than was first hoped. It can happen that surgery sometimes needs to be cancelled if a patient needs a HDU bed and there is none available. This decision is never taken lightly as we fully appreciate the distress it will cause and it is only taken if there is no alternative. As you indicate there are a fixed number of HDU beds. I am saddened to note that you went through additional pain before you had your operation. I hope that you are now recovering well.
