Our son was referred to SLT at Motherwell Health Centre and Pediatrics when he was 2 and a half. He was non verbal and showing signs of being on the autistic spectrum. He was assigned to Louise at SLT and after a few home observations the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) was introduced. This consisted of visual cards our son hand to hand us in order to get what he wanted (e.g juice, dummy). Through time, our son had to attempt to say the word as he handed over the card and eventually all his visual cards went in a book which would become his "voice". Through his book he would learn to build words into sentences. This was not easy at the start but with continued support from Louise and perseverance from us (parents) our son made great progress and has had his case closed from SLT at 4 and a half.
Louise has a vast knowledge of Autism which helped us (parents) understand his daily challenges and how best to support him in a variety of social situations e.g park, family gatherings, supermarkets to name but a few.
We are very thankful that Louise was assigned to our sons case. She was professional, caring and always available. She made a huge difference to our family.
