I had to argue for my appointment tests at the physiological measurement department. I was frustrated as staff seemed determined not to do all the tests the cardiology consultant had asked for. I was told that consultants always ask for tests that are not required and that my consultant was only looking for COPD (news to me), which could not be shown present or not on the spirometer in front of me. I felt very small, but had to ask that my concerns were written down in my notes after trying to argue my point. There was another member of staff the room, but never spoke. That 'turned the table'. I was not put on the spirometer there but reluctantly shown to a different room for some of the required tests using a breathing chamber and machine linked to a computer.
Considering my GP had requested stress breathing tests 15 months previously (along with an ECG and chest xray), and after two months I had enquired at the physiological measurement dept as to the breathing test whereabouts, a member of staff had informed me that I did not require those, and informed me that I had been put through to be consulted with a cardiologist. This appointment came through in the summer and I saw a doctor, who ordered an echo-cardiogram. That was followed up two weeks ago. This is when the cardiologist requested full lung function tests and an CT cardiac coronary angiogram.
Although I was astounded at the member of staff's attitude regarding the tests requested, I do feel I should apologise for me raising my voice in frustration and being more forcefully insistent and managing to get 'my own way'.
