Emergency999 call. Elderly gent with nose bleeding arrived at A&E approx. 8pm. Seen fairly prompt by a nurse BP ,ECG bloods and told by escort that he was taking Warfarin and suffered from Cogestive Cardiac Failure Shunted into corridor with others trolley's chairs etc.then after short wait, to general waiting room . The patient meanwhile his nose continued to bleed mopped by his escort in view ot all in w/room
Never approached by any member of nursing staff(lots around)escort had to ask staff for tissues and eventually mouth mops as
patient was coughing up blood from back of throat . Bleeding was becoming heavier and approx . 21/2hrs. later escort approached nurse and enquired when patient would be seen and could his nose be packed perhaps by a nurse practitioner. She looked at a screen and reported he was well down the list!! I questioned why approx. 6 nursing staff grouped around a monitor and told. looking at bed situation. , Eventually taken by a Dr. into a consulting room who proceeded to pack his nose . She had no assistance of any nurse .
After consulting a Snr .medic he was to be admitted to ASU .Nurse then entered room to check Bp.ESG etc. Later taken to ward and admitted by very competent staff and discharged approx. 36 hrs. later where care and staff were excellent.
General review: Busy night but found staff inadequate in general care and observation of this particular patients requirments. Long wait for haemorrhage ro be treated though told by escort that INR WAS 3.1 24 hrs. previously. Ward care was excellent
"A disappointing experience"
