"My dad's care"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / General Medicine Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / General Surgery Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / High Dependency Unit & Intensive Care Unit

(as a relative),

My dad was discharged from Edinburgh royal, he’d had major surgery to remove liver cancer. His wound had staples in it. No one contacted his GP or practice nurse to remove these and care for the wound. When we called his surgery they said that they had contacted Edinburgh Royal and someone there said his wound was clean and dry and did not need anything done!Eh. Hellloooo. Staples in!

By the time the district nurse attended to them his wound was infected and he required further treatment and a course of antibiotics. Also, when my dad moved from ICU to a ward his belongings were left in his bag on floor next to his bed. I visited 4 days later and still no one sorted them. That’s a safety issue as my dad was very frail on his feet and sore. He asked if he could use a bottle (urinal) during the night as he struggled to get up out of bed He was told no. ‘You can get up! ’ I can see where they would be coming from cause I am a nurse but for one night til he was better on his feet wouldn’t have been detrimental to his recovery!

Whilst visiting my dad in the ward after he was transferred from ICU no one spoke to us or smiled. A nurse took his BP whilst I was there but did not speak to me or even have eye contact. I just think that was rude. I actually felt unwelcome in ward. Also my dad came home without his dentures. When we contacted ward they just said they are not here and nothing else. I happen to know they are responsible for his teeth and should have offered a claim form for this! As a result of no teeth he hasn’t been able to eat much, has lost two stone in weight and very low mood.

Not a very good experience or after care here which I’m very disappointed about because the surgeon was great and a lovely man.

I am very disappointed to read of you and your fathers experience and this is not the care that any patient should receive. I am more than happy to discuss this with you in person so I can look into this in more depth and improve our service.

kind regards

SCN Tinkler

Dear marsew59,

Thank you very much for getting in touch with us through Care Opinion, although I am extremely sorry to read of your Dad’s experience in relation to the major surgery he has had, and the care that you describe for both your Dad and yourself.

I can see that Senior Charge Nurse Tinkler has offered to meet with you in person. I would be very grateful, if possible, if you could please also contact our Patient Experience Team so that we can discuss this matter with you.

Email: feedback@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk Tel: 0131 536 3370

I can hear from your message that this was a most anxious and distressing time for both your Dad and yourself, and I am again truly sorry to read that this has been your Dad’s experience.

In the meantime, I have shared all of your feedback with the Heads of the Clinical Management areas involved.

Thank you again for getting in touch with us.

Kindest regards to both your Dad and yourself.

Pamela
