"Sensory Dynamic Orthosis"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Physiotherapy

(as a parent/guardian),

My son, who has Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, has attended 'Lycra Clinic' for the last 5 years and wears a Lycra SDO top. The garments have been fantastic for improving his left hand usage and core strength.

The clinics and garments were previously funded by The Archie Foundation, but it was decided by the Clinical Advisory Committee that the SDO now come under Core NHS funding - so The Archie Foundation no longer fund the clinics. My son has been using  SDO tops daily for the last 5 years, and has recently outgrown his current one, leaving him without one- and already we are seeing a decline in his posture and left hand usage (these things may seem small, but have a huge impact on my son and the others that attended the Clinic and received SDO garments).

Could you provide me with any information on the progress of the SDO clinics under Core NHS funding  - as the switch board, OT, Physio, Archie Foundation can not give me any information.

I hope that the funding and Clinic dates are not too far in the future, as it is very unfair to stop a Clinic and SDO garment provision so suddenly and without contacting the parents of the children.

Hi Aberdeenshiremum, thanks for posting on care opinion.

I am sorry to hear that there has been a delay in the provision of the clinics and SDO garments that your son requires.

If you could please email Debbie Dawson (debbiedawson@nhs.net) who is the support manager for RACH as she would like more details so that she can provide you with a detailed response and try and resolve your issue.

Please feel free to email myself on carolineclark2@nhs.net if this does not resolve your concern.
