"The care from the theatre staff was brilliant"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I have had knee replacement surgery 6 weeks ago and the care from the theatre staff was brilliant as I was having an epidural and a regional block which I was really nervous about. I can say that things went really well and the doctors and nurses took really good care of me and made sure that I was at ease throughout the surgery.

I was put onto a 40 bed ward which I think was not staffed adequately for the type of patients who were on that ward as it was also a trauma ward. The senior nurses seemed run off their feet along with the HCAs.

I know it was ‘safe staffed‘ but the time it took for staff to issue medication was stupid. When you are in serious pain you want your pain medication there and then and not have to wait over an hour in some cases. I am not blaming the nurses as they did their best but this should be looked at by senior management.

Thank you for your feedback and I hope you are making a good recovery. Winter periods can be extremely busy for the trust as we see a lot more people admitted to the hospital. I will of course pass on your comments and we are always looking for ways in which we can improve the care and the service we provide.
