"Worst hospital"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency

We were told to visit A&E by an out of hours doctor after having to ring 111. We arrived at 5am in thick snow. Upon arriving we went to the reception which we found to be very open and having no privacy in explaining to the receptionist why we were there. We were then asked to sit down and wait. The hospital floor was disgusting with what could of been either dried blood or coffee on.

While we waited we could see the triage nurse looking out of meeting room 1 and could see she wasn’t happy with something. She then calls out my partners name so we went in.

Once in the meeting room my partner was asked why she was there, to which she started explaining the nights events to ensure the nurse knew what was going on. The nurse seemed not bothered about anything my partner was saying as as she was hooking up the blood pressure machine she said no want to know why you’ve come, to which my partner explained we had rang 111, waited 4 hours for s call back and then the doctor advised us to go straight to there and take an overnight bag as my partner needed blood tests ASAP. The nurse had no interest and instead she complained about us being there as she hooked up the blood pressure machine to my partner, to which she never even hooked up right.

The nurse then clsimed that we should have never gone to A&E and that the doctor from the call had no idea what he was doing, also stating we were the 3rd case that night who had same effects and been sent there.

I found the nurse to be very rude and show no interest or understanding of what was or had gone on, instead she claimed there’s nothing she would or could do as it was A&E and there fit life or death situations only not to treat people like us, and as she unhooked the blood pressure monitor told my partner to go to her doctors instead.

I find this totally unacceptable and would mos request a full investigation

I am sorry that you were not happy with the care your partner received in our Emergency Department. Unfortunately during the winter months we are extremely busy with patients who have serious life-threatening conditions who do need to be treated as a priority. This can cause a longer wait for others and in some cases, where it is not urgent, it may be quicker for patients to see a GP / pharmacist. We will however always see anyone who feels that they need to be seen urgently and of course if you would like us to look into this further for you, please contact our Help and Advice Service on the following details:
