I was due for an operation at City Hospital last week, the day before I received a phone call to say that due to winter pressures it had been cancelled.
I know my operation was not necessarily urgent at the time, but if my condition gets worse I would have no option but to attend A&E.
I has psyched myself up for the operation as I was going under general anaesthetic and I always react badly to it.
I have also arranged my work to be prepared for between 2 to 4 week off as I normally work full time.
I am told hat I cannot be given a new date.
I know this is not the fault of the hospital or staff but the government are saying they have put resources in place for the winter pressures and that they have received positive feedback from patients.
40% of hospitals have winter pressures in the first week of the new year so why are we not prepared, the reason is that the Government will not put the money into making sure the NHS is funded properly.
So what are they doing now, community services are being asked to stop what they are doing to make sure as many people as possible are discharged, so then what happens to the normal community patients, is their care not important.
The Government are saying that even though there are winter pressures, that most people are happy with the service, yes this is because they know what pressures nhs staff are under and they didn't ask the right questions.
I am not happy that my operation was cancelled, although I appreciate why the hospital had to do it.
