I was sent to Children's Accident and Emergency directly from The Walk in Centre. My daughter was suffering from a very bad case of chicken pox. We were sent to sit in the baby changing unit on arrival for an 1 hour before being triage and then sent to an isolation room directly from the baby changing room there we were left for 3.5hrs.
During triage no baseline observations were taken despite my daughter feeling extremely warm to touch and visibly flushed.
During our time in isolation for the 3.5hrs not 1 nurse or member of staff came in to see us nor keep us updated on how long the wait would be, not one set of observations were taken. I understand that the department was very busy but with a child with a temperature and rash I would of though of set of observations on arrival would of been basic nursing care.
I called my mother for support and she quickly came in to see what was happening. I watched my mother as she approached the nursing station and asked politely if they knew how long it would be as we were concerned regarding the increasing rash and high temperature. The sister sat at the desk looked her up and down and simply said no. There was no offer to help.
As my mother went to the next nurse I watched the sister whisper to her colleague and they both just sat and watched my mother looking for help. I felt this was very disrespectful and not what you would expect from anyone in a caring profession.
After another 15 minutes we were seen by the doctor who called for the registrar. We were told that it looked like a very bad case of chicken pox and they were concerned it had gone into her cornea. Due to my daughter being so distressed they could not assess this and sent us on to eye casualty.
I mentioned that she was unable to drink due the amount of sores in her mouth and her tongue was constantly hanging out and the doctor said buy some difflam on the way home. Again not what I would expect.
We were sent to eye casualty where the experience was more positive.
However, this morning my daughter woke up looking even worse that yesterday and both eyes were completely closed over. I took her straight back to Accident and Emergency but this time I went to George Elliot.
George Elliot was absolutely brilliant. Observations were taken, medication was given and prescribed and a clear plan was set.
The whole experience of UHCW has left me feeling very let down.
