I was very disappointed regarding the early post-operative care for my deaf 95 yr old mother after her emergency admission to ward 8 with a broken hip and a chest infection.
It seemed as though there were many staff, all kind but busy, and no-one with particular interest or responsibility for my mother or even the bay she was in.
I shared serious concerns on three separate occasions with a senior nurse (in charge of ward?) and on third day with ward's senior doctor. He not only explained the medical care but referred me to modern matron, and obviously told her of my worries because she came to find me!
Her sympathetic ear and understanding reponses reinforced that my concerns were more than reasonable, and she investigated and then instigated a very detailed care plan which seemed to me to make a huge difference to Mum's care.
I had felt as though I might be fussing, but if I was, I am glad. Tracey, the modern matron, has sought me out again today and we talked at length about our current concerns. I now think Mum is in very safe hands on ward 8 even though she has many obstacles ahead of her and might not make it.
