I visited at 07:30 as soon as doors opened, the reception staff where nice and polite and I waited my turn to see the nurse practitioner, there where only 2 or 3 other people before me, the young lady before me was only approx 2 mins with the nurse and came out in tears - hmm didn’t bode well and how right I was. I entered the minuscule room where you literally fall in to the chair as it is that small to see 2 nurse practitioners, one behind the desk coughing her lungs out (throughout the exam) and the other treating me abruptly and being very curt with her questions (it’s not like she was having a bad day as it had only just started) she demanded as to why I did not see my GP, I told her I did not have one and was between surgeries, I explained that I had a rash on my legs to which she (abruptly) told me to remove my trousers - no please or thank you and in a small office not that easy, also the door to the office has a window and is 2 feet from the waiting patients outside so privacy is not as good as it should be. She looked at the rash and gave me a torn piece of paper with a name of over the counter cream to get, she never once said what my rash was or what caused it (it turns out that the cream is for eczema - which I don’t have, this is a reaction to something?) she asked if I smoked which I do and then proceeded to lecture me on giving up, well if I want to be preached to then I will go to a church I wanted my rash resolved after having it for 3 weeks not be treated like Satan’s spawn because I smoke. I actually work for the NHS and have never spoken to a patient in this manner and could not believe the abruptness and matter of fact attitude that I was given, I appreciate that they, like my other NHS colleagues are very busy and under pressure but if I spoke to a patient like this in my dept I would have a major strip torn of me by my managers.
The MIU has always been good on the few times I have visited it in the past but I would not go and see the nurse practitioners again with the attitude that they displayed to their patients. As I work at the Q.A. Hospital I was lucky enough to be able to call in a favour and saw a dermatology consultant (not something I like to do as patients come first) he diagnosed a completely different issue and has treated me appropriately and was horrified to hear about my treatment.
