"Unsupported nurses"

About: Peterborough City Hospital

I have recently been discharged from hospital following being admitted with sepsis and pneumonia.

When I was first admitted I was placed on Ward B6 as my initial diagnosis was that I may have diabetes.

I was given medication via an IV and settled into a room.

I was very unwell during the night and in a lot of pain, I didn't see a nurse all night and all the HCA seemed to be interested in was filling out forms and asking me what jewellery I was wearing despite me telling him I was in pain.....

The following day it was discovered that I had sepsis and pneumonia and after being unresponsive I was moved to intensive care where I nearly died.

The staff working on intensive care were amazing and thankfully saved my life.

Following this I was then moved to B12, where I remained until being discharged.

Staff on this ward where mostly good with the exception of a few HCA's who seemed more interested in getting through their list of jobs, i.e.. making beds than taking care of patients.

Basic Obs were infrequent and blood sugars were not taken when they should be.

Over the weekend neither were done all weekend until night staff came on.

Medications were very often late, up to 2 hours, on one occasion 4 hours later when my husband chased them up and another occasion I was given medication at 19.45 instead of 18.00 and then offered my next lot at 22.00.

When i pointed out that I wouldn't be able to take them as there was not a four hour gap the nurse told me it said I had been given then at 18.00 in my notes.

The poor nurses despite wearing an apron saying do not interrupt as doing drugs round were constantly disturbed by patients asking for commodes etc and staff asking questions which just makes the nurses later.

Is it not the HCA's jobs to deal with commodes?

HCA's filled out care notes without actually completing the tasks that they ticked and one nurse had put that I had been given antibiotics at 3am when it was 6am.

Of course I am thankful that PCH saved my life but a lot of the HCA's could do with retraining as this gives the excellent HCA's a bad name.
