My medical treatment was excellent however the after care in the ward (4) was very poor.
The ward was overheated, probably about 28-30 degrees. Nursing staff shrugged their shoulders when asked to regulate temperature of the ward- '"fans could not be used as they had not been PAT tested, and windows simply should not be opened as contamination could enter via the windows"
One nurse was not interested in assisting an elderly patient to go to the bathroom, same nurse woke me twice to tell me to use the bathroom. Both times I told her I had had a catheter fitted, she got quite stroppy the second time i told her it was simply not possible for me to use the toilet, and I would say her attitude was flippant, bordering on abusive, particulalry to the elderly patient on the ward. She woke me in the middle of the night whilst i was connected to a morphine dispenser, told me i needed to get out of bed, and left me to it, feeling disoriented, hooked up to various drips and with no assistance, no anti-slip aids and no indiication how high the bed was. An auxiliary came to my aid and put me back to bed- how I didnt fall over or injure myself I dont know.
The food was appalling. Lunch consisted of an uncooked baked potato, a blob of grey gloopy tuna and mayonnaise-like gloop, and some additive filled vanilla ice cream. Breakfast was 2 slices of sliced white bread toast, a portion of marmalade and a cup of tea. How anybody can expect to get well with such nutrionally poor food defies me, I would request the management team physivally review both the menus and the standards of the food on offer.
My medical care and the staff that did my interventikn could not have been better, every detail was explained in advance, cleanliness appeared very good and nothing was too much trouble for the medcial team (radiology dept).
It's a real shame that these high medical standards are not replicated throughout the hospital- do different managers have different standards?
Where are the NICE standards with regard to nutrition? Are nursing staff supervised following initial qualification, specificall with regard to care of vulnerable and elderly patients?
