"A&E"

About: Russells Hall Hospital

I visited Russells hall hospital A&E department with my mother one evening as she is an asthma sufferer and had trouble breathing, we had problems even finding the department as we had no idea it had been closed for refurbishment, this wasn't sign posted or if it was we just didn't see it in the dark!

When we did find the temporary A&E department we were told to sit and wait which we did for 2 hours before seeing the nurse then told to sit and wait some more, to cut a very long story short my elderly mother waited a total of 9 hours on hard metal seats to be eventually sent home with antibiotics. I would like to point out the doctors and nurses were great when we did eventually get seen this review is not a reflection on their ability to do their job but clearly something isn't working, it is totally unacceptable to wait this amount of time.

Thank you taking the time to provide feedback on your recent visit to A&E.

We are sorry to learn you had difficulty locating the temporary Emergency Department waiting room. Large format signs directing patients to the temporary area have been in place while the new urgent treatment centre was being built. The works are almost complete and patients will be sign posted to the new entrance.

We apologise for the amount of time your mother waited. The Emergency Department is a very busy area, especially during the winter pressures currently faced by A&E departments across the NHS currently.

However, this does not excuse the discomfort your mother and you experienced because of the long wait so we apologise for this.

Your comments, along with the praise for the staff that treated your mother, have been brought to the attention of the lead nurse for A&E to distribute to the rest of the team.
