"Rehydration"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Neurosurgery

This is NOT a complaint! With one exception I was totally satisfied with my experience of the day case unit.

Having seen notices throughout the campus advising people to drink more water I expected, on returning to the ward from a GA procedure, to find at least a jug of water and a plastic cup.

I expected to be encouraged by the staff to drink as much as I could in order to facilitate the passing of urine which I had been told was necessary before I left to go home.

No water or other fluids were present at my bedside and none were offered. When I asked for fluids they were provided quite willingly by the staff but not in great volume. This seems at odds with the overall policy.

NB I have had to select a department from the list provided. I am a patient of that department but spent the day in question in the day case unit.

Firstly I personally would like to apologise on behalf of my team, who were very surprised to hear this.

As a Trust we are promoting the Think Drink Campaign, which encourages the drinking of fluids for some patients. Queen’s Day Case Unit staff routinely offer patients post procedure a drink and a sandwich and ask if a jug of water would be required.

Water and cups are not left by the bed side as the Day Case Unit is unlike ward areas where by one patient would take up that one space. Three or four patients may rotate through a bed space for different procedures and therefore water and cups are not left at the bed space so they are not accidentally given to the wrong patient, knocked over and create a hazard, and out of consideration for other patients that are nil by mouth.

I will by all means raise this with all the staff to ensure they are offering the patient a jug of water post procedure as well as the hot drink and sandwich/toast to assist in their recovery.

I thank you for the feedback and will respond to this with the staff on QDCU for all future patients.

Kind Regards

Jeanette Johnson, Matron.
