"Children's emergency department/Ward 16"

About: University Hospital (Coventry)

My son was bought to CED by ambulance on Monday the 18th December then admitted to ward 16. We received excellent care from all the nurses, doctors and HCAs - which is the main thing. The first doctor we saw in A&E was incredibly kind and compassionate to a very confused and usually very shy boy - she even managed to make him smile, rather than just going ahead with her checks whether he was happy or not she took the time to make him comfortable with what she was doing despite how busy they were that night - which I'm sure made a huge difference to how settled he was!

Our experience of the ED was a positive one, however a couple of small negatives that perhaps could have improved our experience (after all we cannot learn without honest feedback!). The room we were put into hadn't had the sheets changed from the previous person and the paper cover was scrunched up as though it had been used - I think we were quickly placed into the room as a matter of urgency so I presume there wasn't time, however it is a basic hygiene issue so thought I'd mention it. The floor in the room had discarded tissues, mud and a blood stain on it - which again may have been due to the rush to put us in a room, cleaning is obviously not the priority when there is so many poorly children I understand, but it obviously puts said children at risk of further illness. Overall he received excellent care which is the main thing, so thank you to all the ED staff who cared for him which such compassion.

We were admitted to ward 16, where we were also treated very well despite how busy it was - so thanks to them as well.

Thank you for sharing your feedback on NHS Choices.

I hope your son has been doing well following his visit to our Children's Emergency Department and his stay on Ward 16.

I was really pleased to hear that your son received such good care from our doctors, nurses and healthcare assistants, despite how busy the department was when you visited.

We have passed on your feedback to the team which manages our Children's services so that they can thank the staff, but also be aware of the concerns you raised about the cleanliness of some of the rooms in the Emergency Department.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, we appreciate all comments both positive and negative, as it helps us to better understand our patients’ needs and to continually improve.
