"In limbo awaiting results"

About: Victoria Hospital / SEAL (Surgical Elective Admission Lounge)

(as the patient),

I had a colonoscopy almost 5 weeks ago. Was extremely anxious about this procedure for weeks before it, regular sleepless nights and barely functioning. Although staff were great on the day the procedure was extremely painful as sedatives were not effective despite receiving an increased dosage.

Five weeks later and I am still awaiting results. Have been told it can be one of two diagnoses and that I will need treatment. Symptoms have now increased and I am now experiencing bleeding. During a visit to the Dr recently I was informed that it can be "months before results can be confirmed and I'm not bleeding much as my blood pressure is fine". I have been told I will need treatment but nothing can be done until they get results.

I was also informed on the day of my procedure that I would be sent an appointment for a scan and have the procedure within two weeks. The letter to the Dr regarding the scan was dated end of Nov and another three weeks on I'm still waiting on an appointment.

In the meantime my anxiety is at an all time high. I feel that I am living in limbo where I am trapped in a system that just sees me as a number and not a person who is worried about my health. A lack of prompt treatment could mean further issues in the future.

Update posted by caringcg47 (the patient)

I found the response really helpful. Talking to someone who can assist me get my desired outcome was very welcoming. The conversation left me feeling human again, less frustrated and as though my feelings and anxieties were recognised. I'm more hopeful of receiving my results soon.

I just want to add that on the day of my procedure the staff involved in my care went the extra mile to try and reduce my anxieties. They made the effort and took the time to explain the procedure and answer not only my questions but also my husbands. Finally the staff at the end of the phone post procedure were also helpful in offering reassurance and sorting out an alternative preparation for me.
