"Basic needs not met"

About: The Royal Victoria Infirmary / Paediatrics

My daughter was admitted from A&E. Whilst the doctors and nurses were lovely and professional in caring for my condition, her basic needs were not met. For two days a jug of water wasn’t even offered and when I asked for one I got told there was a shop on a lower floor. Well when I’m on my own with a toddler it wasnt really an option. I couldn’t leave her as she was frightened and not could I take her with me. She wasn’t offered breakfast and by lunch time she was brought a meal that was stone cold. Little things like this can really make a stay in hospital that bit easier, and demonstrates care and compassion. The fact that it was totally ignored was disgusting really.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback on our Children’s Services at the RVI. I am very sorry that the level of care you received fell below a reasonable standard, you should have been provided with appropriate food and drinks and I have asked the Matron to look into this matter and identify why this happened, we would be keen to discuss this in more detail, if you were willing to do so please contact Jane Melvin, Directorate Manager on 0191 282 5261 or our Patient Relations Department on 0191 223 1382 or by email at patient.relations@nuth.nhs.uk

We do strive to provide the highest standards of care and we apologise that on this occasion we failed and we are pleased that you felt your daughter’s clinical care was professional and appropriate and I hope she has made a good recovery.
