I brought my grandson to Croydon University hospital, as he was running 39-40 C temp for 4 days, vomiting, and not eating and drinking. We came around 2200. Staff was very good, including doctors and nursing staff, very helpful, especially Dr Muhammed. He monitored him for some time because of his fast heart rate. We went home with an advice to come back if any more symptoms develop. Next morning, he again vomited but dark brown, like bloody vomit. We came back to A&E as we worried that may be it's because of medication which was keeping his temp down ( he was not responding to calpol). We waited for more than two hours, with a 2 yr old who was ill and 3 month old who was fine but on breast feeding so couldn't left him at home. After half an hour of triaged, we were told that we are the next one on the list. After more than an hour, we were told twice that there is one more ahead of us. We were watching that, people who came after us , were seen first, although their sick children were playing in the playing area and we were waiting with these two little babies. As I worked in this hospital, I saw one of the A&E consultant who was passing by. When he asked, I told him, that we are waiting that long, after inquiry, I was told that there is only one doctor and somebody has taken my grandson's notes to see him next. But still no chance. Ultimately, after about almost about more than two and a half hours, we were seen. It was a good and satisfactory consultation, also quickly seen by the registrar. We were discharged with an advice to come back, if he vomits a larger amount or fresh blood. He again vomited brownish vomit after this, but in small amount so we went home.
I am not criticising anybody. Everybody was very helpful and nice, and do appreciate that, if emergency comes, others had to wait. But I think, it will be nice if somebody comes and explain the things, rather than waiting parents or relatives to go there and ask again and again. I was afraid for the 3 month old, as he was in the infectious area, with so many children, coughing around him. Other thing is that most of them were wearing blues, so it was difficult to differentiate who is who. Some of them were wearing the name plates and were introducing themselves, others were not wearing the name plates and were not even introducing them.
Other thing is that during the day, there should be more than one doctor. During the night, I saw quite few of them, but was told that there is only one in the morning. Nurse In charge was nice and helpful, but she was under lots of stress as there were quite few emergencies and I asked her twice so she became more stressful, I am sorry about that, but this should be escalated, that more help is needed. I don't know, but when I spoke to the A&E consultant, he told me that he will send somebody from the adult side of the A&E, to come and help in the paediatric part.
Apart from that, very good experience, and very nice staff.
